Mando Huerta, Mayor of Maywood Boxing
06/17 2017—Left the 110 degree temp in Lancaster, Ca. and headed for the city of Maywood to do a story on my boy Ricardo Serrano and his young stable. Rick must not have gotten the memo because I never saw him. He let me know later he had a legit excuse so he gets a pass. WCB will be going back to doing stories on some of the future stars of Southern California’s young boxers and trust ME; we have some SUPER talented kids.
The excursion wasn’t a total loss; it never is when I visit a boxing gym. The Maywood Boxing Gym is manned by one of my long time coaching buddies, Mando Huerta. I coached the City of Inglewood amateur boxing team for a dozen years and my kids had some great tussles with those damn roughnecks from Maywood. Mando’s son Charles was especially hard on my boys and his star female, Lisette Medel was no day at the park, either. She and Charles are both in the pros now, and will be future subjects of WCB. It’s always a pleasure hooking up with some of my past coaching brethren. Here’s how our interview went.
WCB : Ok, Mando, let’s get the bullshit outta’ the way and get it over with. What do you think about this Mayweather-McGreggor bullshit?
MH: (laughing, which was to be expected), Don, let me tell you a story. Nick Diaz who beat Connor the first time, came to our gym for some sparring and Nick had some boxing experience and I put him in with a couple of my amateur kids they beat the heck outta’ him really laid it on him. Diaz never boxed amateur but had a lotta’ training in the gym. My kids were just 16 and 17 years old. I’ve never seen this guy, I don’t even know what his name is, oh, Connor. I saw him get beat up by some amateurs so I just see this as him seeing how much of a beating he can take and how long he’s gonna’ last. I think the stuff leading up to the fight’s gonna’ be more interesting.
WCB: Yeah, and that’s what I don’t get, fight fans are always crying about the ‘right’ fights not being made, guys ducking other guys, YET, have NO trouble buying THIS shit and THEN having Floyd count it as his 50th straight win….
MH: Yeah, they need to put an asterisk, a BIG one, beside THAT (laughing). This will be like Ali and that wrestler.
WCB: You gonna’ pay for it…
MH: (laughing), aw, nah, but I will BE there. Sal Rodriguez might be fighting that night and I’ll be wrapping his hands.
WCB: Yeah, I’ve had someone tell me if I’m so against it, I shouldn’t even comment on it. I said HELL no, it’s a fkn. JOKE and I’ll be telling jokes ABOUT it. This is an INSULT to ME as a boxing fan. I can’t see how a true fan would even be interested in this shit and accept it as legit.
MH: Exactly, and all these good boxers out there that can’t get a shot, it’s bad, it’s really bad for boxing. People think he (McGreggor) can land that left hand but that won’t happen. Floyd’s always in the gym, was like that his whole career so the layoff won’t be a problem.
WCB: that’s one thing that amazes me about Floyd, in spite of all his accomplishments and wealth; he still finds the time to stay in shape.
WCB: I know shit about MMA, how many rounds…..
MH: They fight five, five minute rounds, but they rest a lot when they’re wrestling. I’ve had MMA guys come to the gym and can’t even spar three rounds. The conditioning for boxing is WAY different.
WCB: Last thing coach, what’s your son up to and when can I do something on him? Last time we were gonna’ do something on him, he was at Disneyland and never showed up. He was young then, still in the ams.
MH: Laughing, awwww. I’m surprised you remember THAT, man, that was a LONG time ago. Charles will be here next Saturday, give me a call and we can set something up, for sure. Thanks Don, I appreciate this.
WCB: No problem, I wanna’ talk to Lissette, too.
Mando’s one of those guys that never changes, always engaging and always having the time for the up and
