11/04/2017- Al Davis would’ve LOVED Shawn (Showtime) Porter. The former welterweight champ, cares ONLY about winning and could GIVE two poops about how he looks doing it. Porter (27-2-1-17K) faced the game, crowd pleaser, but seriously limited, Adrian Granados (18-5-2-11K). Porter fights like and looks like former hw champ Leon Spinks, put your head down and walk in, trying to hit whatever you can. Porter always has that half smile on his face, letting his opponents know, ‘I ain’t changin’ shit’. Whatever he can get away with is all good as far as the rugged, relentless Porter is concerned. Granados is game as they come but he doesn’t seem to be the same guy that beat Amir Imam and gave Ghetto Boy Broner hard fights, stopping the undefeated Imam, to boot. Last night, he was dragged into an alley fight with the muscular Porter and he wasn’t gonna’ win THAT. At times Granados was so sloppy, running at Porter and just flailing away. He was talking to the crowd, and at one time, yelled “hi mom” to his mom sitting near ringside and for his transgression, he was punched in the mouth with a ‘stay focused, son’ right hand by Showtime. Needless to say, nothing else was said to mom until AFTER the fight. The crowd enjoyed this no holds barred scrap, not knowing what was gonna’ happened at any given moment. There were some takedowns, rabbit shots, shit talked, running around the ring, you name it. There were no knockdowns, for all his muscles, Porter doesn’t seem to be a really big hitter. He’s like that Cornelious Brundage guy , dripping with muscles but not a lotta’ power. This was like something you’d see on the streets or in a bar. Granados doesn’t mind the rough stuff, he’s just not as accomplished at it as Porter. Around the 8th round, Porter landed a left hook to the side of Adrian’s head, bending his wrist, which hampered his efforts down the stretch. Granados still didn’t do enough to win it, regardless of how he felt afterwards. If you’re looking for something in Granados to hang your hat on, your hat would fall to the floor. Fighters are never honest about these sorta’ things. Porter was awarded a unanimous win and called out Keith (One Time) Thurman, WBA / WBC welterweight boss. He wants Danny Garcia REAL bad, though.
Earlier in a bout scheduled for the vacant IBF title, unbeaten prospect Sergey Lipinets (12-0-10-K) faced Akihiro Kondo (29-6-1-16K). This was a back and forth affair with both combatants tossing lots of leather. Both guys were in excellent shape and Lipinets received a butt induced cut to his forehead. Lipinets is kinda’ slick ‘n quick and seemed to have the advantage early but in my view (and I’m no Adalaide Byrd) but Kondo seemed to come on down the stretch and seemed to land the higher volume of shots. The decision however, went to Lipinets although a rematch should be on the menu. Strange enough, Kondo fought all 36 six of his prior bouts in the SAME arena. Now, THAT, my friends is strange. Hell, he makes Andre Ward seem like a world traveler.
